Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's bustline by inserting an implant behind each breast. The surgery can increase your bustline by one or more bra cup sizes and is most ideal for the
woman who is looking for improvement, not perfection, in her overall appearance.

Common reasons you might choose breast enlargement include:
• enhancing your body contour by increasing breast size
• replacing breast fullness after pregnancy
• balancing a difference in breast size
• breast reconstruction after mastectomy

The Procedure
A surgical procedure to enhance the size of the breasts using inflatable implants filled with saline or silicone. Typically, the procedure lasts one to two hours, is performed on an outpatient basis and is accompanied by general anesthesia or sedation. The incision is made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest or around the areola (the dark skin surrounging the nipple).

The breast implant itself is a silicone shell filled with a salt-water solution known as saline or a silicone gel. We offer both options as a safe solution for implants.

Before Your Breast Augmentation
At this visit, we will take payment and answer any questions you may have. We accept major credit cards, money orders and cash. Sorry, no personal checks.

You will also receive any prescriptions that you may need. We recommend that you get these filled and have them ready so that you will not need to stop at the pharmacy on your way home from surgery.

Arrangements will also be made at this visit for any necessary pre-operative evaluations such as blood tests, pregnancy tests, EKG, etc. There will likely be some additional charges if any of these tests are required.

DIET & MEDICATIONS
PLEASE, eat nothing and drink nothing after midnight the night before surgery. This is VERY important. Your surgery will be canceled if you eat or drink in the morning before surgery. The only exception is a sip of water with any medications you must take. Generally, you should take blood pressure and heart medications. Leave off arthritis medications and do NOT take any diabetic medications (including insulin) unless specifically instructed to do so.

DRESSINGS & BATHING
Please take a good shower with antibacterial soap the night before and the morning of surgery. Wear loose comfortable clothing with a shirt that buttons up the front since you won’t want to put your arms over your head for a while after surgery.

Bring with you a sports bra that hooks in the front. Chose a bra that fits you comfortably now (or is a little loose). You will wake up with that bra on so be sure you have it with you rather than giving it to your family to keep.

Risks
• Lack of implant permanence. Surgical removal or replacement of the implants may be required to treat problems, including: implant deflation; the formation of scar tissue around the implant (capsular contracture), which may cause the breast to feel tight or hard; bleeding; or infection.
• Increase or decrease in sensitivity of nipples or breast skin (occasionally permanent)

After Your Breast Augmentation

DIET
Take it slow and easy with diet. Start with clear liquids and simply advance as tolerated. It is normal to have some nausea from anesthetics and pain medication but by taking it easy, this should resolve quickly.

ACTIVITY
Take it easy. Walking is good. Bouncing is bad. A good rule is “If it hurts, don’t do it”. As you start to feel better, you may gradually increase your activity. Don’t plan to drive for a couple of weeks since restricted arm movement may limit your response time in an emergency.

PAIN
There is discomfort after any surgery. We want to help you limit pain as much as possible but we will not be able to take it all away. Most patients feel best sitting up with their bra securely fastened. The goal of pain medication is to prevent¬ pain so don’t wait until you are really hurting to take your medication. Follow the instructions for your prescription and we think you will get the best relief possible. Narcotics can cause constipation so drink plenty of water, eat fruit and use an over the counter laxative if needed.

DRESSINGS & BATHING
Wear the surgical bra day and night until your sutures are removed. You may remove the bra long enough for a shower the day after surgery. There will be tape across the incisions. These will stay on very well through a shower so just leave them on, shower over and pat them dry. Don’t try to judge your size or shape too early. There will be changes over the next few months until you see your final result.
